Do the Ash’aris and Maturidis belong to the Ahlus-Sunnah? Shaykh al-Uthaimin (رحمه الله) Refutes the Statements of Muhammad ad-Dadaw
Muhammad al-Hassan Walad ad-Dadaw: The Madhahib of the Ahlus-Sunnah are three: (First:) The Madhab of Ahlul-Hadith which people nowadays call the Salafi Madhab,
and which is originally the Hanbali Madhab.
(Secondly:) The Ash’ari madhab. (And third:) The madhab of Abu Mansur al-Maturidi.
And all of them belong to the Madhahib (ways) of the Ahlus-Sunnah.
Shaykh al-‘Allamah Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaimin (رحمه الله): By the statement of the author (رحمه الله), we know that those who contradict them in their way (the Ahlus-Sunnah) are not of them.
The Ash’aris, for example, and likewise the Maturidis, are not counted among the Madhahib of the Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama’a.
This because they contradict how the Prophet (ﷺ) and his companions understood the attributes of Allah, Exalted and High is He.
Therefore, he who says that the Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama’a are three (Madhahib) commits an error: the Salafis, the Ash’aris and the Maturidis.
This is a mistake. How can they all belong to the Ahlus-Sunnah even though they have differences of opinion! What is there after truth but error?
How can they all be from the Ahlus-Sunnah even though each refutes the other. This is not possible.
Unless one could reconcile two opposing statements, then yes.
But here there is no doubt that only one of them is on the Sunnah. Who are they? The Ash’aris. the Maturidis, the Salafis?
We look at whoever agrees with the Sunnah, he is on the Sunnah. And whoever goes against the Sunnah, he is not on the Sunnah. Is this clear?
We say that those (who are on the way) of the Salaf (of the first generations) are the Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama’a, And this never applies to others.
The words are understood according to their meanings We look: How can we call those who contradict the Ahlus-Sunnah, as Ahlus-Sunnah? This is not possible.
And how can we say that these three conflicting groups belong together.
Where is the togetherness here? The Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama’a are the Salaf.
Those who preceded in time or those who have the faith of the Salaf (the first generations)?
Those who have the faith of the Salaf (the first generations)! Even if they have lived later (in time), be it until the Day of Resurrection.
Whoever is on that on which the Prophet (ﷺ) and his companions were, he is of the Salaf, he is Salafi.
Now who is the Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama’a?
Tell me if I am wrong or right!
“The Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama’a includes the Salafis, the Ash’aris and the Maturidis?”
Student: this is wrong!
This is wrong? Good!
“Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama’a are the Salafis?”
Student: this is correct!
This is correct! It is the Salafis! Good!
Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama’a are only those who are on that on which the Prophet (ﷺ) and his companions were.
And whoever contradicts them, he perishes.
Ibn Qudama (رحمه الله) said that they (the Ash’aris) are innovators.
He said in the “Kitab al-Munadhara fi al-Qur`an” on page 35: “We know of no group among the people of the innovations who hide their views or have not dared to present them openly except the heretics and the Ash’aris.”
And he said in the “Tahrim an-Nathar fi Kutub al-Kalam” on page 42: Ahmad ibn Ishaq al-Maliki said, “The people of desires and innovations are with us the people of Kalaam. Any mutakallim (those who prune their minds in `Aqidah) from the people of desires and innovations, they he an Ash’ari or anything else, so his testimony will not be accepted and he will be boycotted…”
